WI-02: Desktop Utilities ------------------------- 12351 Calendars/Reminders Small Programs Disk ------------------------- Alarm 1.11 (ALRMPMS) Perpetual Motion Software $15 is an advanced desktop reminder system. Alarms can be set for a specific date, for specific days of the week, and for certain repetition intervals. An adjustable snooze bar is provided for each message, and messages can have up to six lines of free-form text. Julie 1.0 Montoro, Anthony R. $7 is a Julian date converter and range finder. Click on a day in the calendar to get its Julian date. Click on two dates to get the number of days between them. VBRUN required. mgCAL Gillie, Mike $0 is a simple, but handy, calendar display. Clicking on the scroll bar changes the display a year at a time. Clicking on the scroll arrows changes a month at a time. Requires VBRUN. Nag 5.0 (NAG5) Denam Systems $15 is a desktop date reminder and time tracking system. It is designed to be run at boot-time, and can be set up to activate only when an event is scheduled. Events are easily categorized as business, medical, miscellaneous, etc., and are assigned a priority code. A tickler function lets you enter recurring events that fall on a particular day of the week. A time-tracking feature will keep a log of time spent on a project. PopCal 3.0 Nathaniel Johnson Associates $0 is a small monthly calendar display. You can page forward a month or a year at a time. Other features include an always on top option, a digital clock display, and a button for highlighting the current date. Requires VBRUN200 and WIN31. QuikCal 1.0 Johnson, Alan $10 is a small calendar/appointment utility. It displays a month at a time. Up to five events can be entered per day. A list of events for the month can be printed. TimeToo 1.2.s Wizard's Toybox, Inc. $1 will run a program or display a message on a user-specified time and date. Up to 50 message/program selections can be maintained. An optional beep can be sounded when the message pops up. WinCal Pozner, Alan $5 is a quick and simple calendar display. It displays a month at a time in a small window and allows you to select a new month with the mouse or a hot key. WingDate 2.0 (WINGDAT) Silverwing Systems $0 is a simple desktop reminder system. It provides a quick visual reminder of upcoming important events. A list of events is displayed in Month/Day order with the current date or next most significant date highlighted. Requires VBRUN200. Year 1.1 Software Professional $20 lets you see a year at a glance. You can view any Gregorian calendar year from the range 1 to 32767 A.D. A database of cities is provided for easy setup. The hourly chime can be customized. BarClock 1.31 (BARCLOC) Breen, Patrick $5 (formerly WinClock) displays a clock in the caption bar of the active window. You can specify the position of the clock, the time format, and the date format. This is an excellent way to keep track of time without losing any desktop space. Clock of Doom 1.0 (CODOOM) Neon Softworks $0-$10 displays a variety of interesting information instead of the time. On a second-by-second basis, it can show military spending, how many acres of the world's irreplaceable forests are being destroyed, the increase in the Federal deficit, the number of barrels of oil being used by automobiles. You can also customize it to display less depressing statistics, like the number of miles being ridden on bicycles. Crito's Clock 4.1 (CRITCLK) Philippatos, Crito P. $4 displays the day of the week, date and time. You can change colors of the text and background, and you can customize the size and location of the display box. You can also force the display to stay on top of other apps. VBRUN is required. Elephant Clock (ELEPHNT) Soapbox $7 is a stay-on-top time display guaranteed not to get in your way (it moves as the mouse cursor approaches it). Liberal Clock 1.10P (LIB-CLK) Sands, Richard R. $0 displays the approximate time in English ("about ten til five"). It will optionally display time in Day-Date-Time format. Nanji Desu Ka 1.0a (NDK) Bells and Whistles Software $0 displays the time in Japanese with the English translation underneath as a tool for learning some Japanese. An option is provided for showing the Japanese text only. VBRUN is required. Project Clock 1.0 (PROJCLK) Heath, Robert A. $7 allows you to monitor and optionally record time usage on various projects. It runs unobtrusively as a digital clock icon and shows elapsed time rather than wallclock time. You can also create and view a project log file with optional comments. StopWatch 1.0 (STOPWAT) Brody, Evan $0 is a stopwatch that shows elapsed time. Pushing the start button displays the current system time, and pushing stop displays the elapsed time. VBRUN reqd. Timelin3 (TIMELN3) $0 displays the date and time in the lower right corner of your monitor. The right mouse button terminates the application. WClock 1.0 Rhodes, Dylan $10 displays the time in an approximate, English language format. Instead of an analog or digital readout, it will display "It's around ten thirty," etc. World Clock 1.2 (WRLDCLK) Narwhal Budgie Software $5 displays local time, along with the current time in all U.S. time zones. Several European and Asian time zones are also displayed. Up to three separate alarms can be set, and each alarm can display a text message or launch an application. When minimized, the program's icon displays the local time. VBRUN is required. WorldTime for Windows 2.1a (WTIME) Pegasus Development $16 displays the current local time, Greenwich Mean Time, and the time in each of the five continental U.S. time zones and in any of over 100 locations around the world. Other features include local time and date display, a database of over 170 international locations, 12 or 24-hour display, network support, and more. Requires WIN31 and VGA. World Time A.1.3 (WRLDTIM) Hallock, Dan $0 (formerly Time Zone) displays the current time for your location, the Greenwich Median time, and the time for any location you select. It can display the time in a variety of formats (standard, military, stardate, or stardate with TNG sync). Other features include a system resource monitor, Windows shutdown/ restart options, WAV sound file support, live DDE link to other applications, and more. This is a must-have for all Star Trek fans! Requires VBRUN200. Stopwatch for Windows NT (SW-NT) Pocket-Sized Software $5 is a computerized stopwatch and clock. SysClock 2.1 (SYSCLK) 09-93 CD Green Lantern Software $0 is a powerful, multi-function clock. Its small display shows the date/time and free system resources. Other features include multiple alarms, file launching, system info display, exit/restart Windows options, and a file finding utility. Requires VBRUN300. Timer for Windows 3.0 (TIMRWIN) Smart Typesetting $10 keeps track of elapsed time. Each timer can be individually named, and that name is displayed beneath the icon when the timer is minimized. This is useful to surveyors and other users of optical measuring equipment. It converts base 60 angles to radian units and vice versa. VBRUN is required. Big Number Cruncher 1.05 (BNCRNCH) 09-93 CD Ivory Tower Software $0 lets you perform math operations on very large numbers without round-off errors. You can add, subtract, or divide two numbers of up to 45-digits. You can also multiply any two integers as long as the product is 45 digits or less. VBRUN300 is required. Date Calculator (DATECAL) Leithauser, David $10 performs several useful date calculations. It can tell you the number of days between two dates, the date it will be a certain number of days after a given date, and the day of the week that a given date falls on. VBRUN is required. HPCalc 3.20 Patey, Eric $15 is an HP-style scientific calculator for Windows. Line Calculator (LINECAL) Vass, Garry J. $0 is a calculator that accepts text/line oriented input (like 5+6+7). It performs simple mathematical functions, along with 11 trig functions. Stay-On-Top Calculator 2.01 (SOTCALC) 09-93 CD CheckBox Software $30 is a small desktop calculator that always stays on top of other applications. It can be configured to stay in any part of your screen, and supports all standard calculator functions, including memory functions. It also features robust Scientific, Business, Unit Conversion, and Statistics modules. VBRUN200 is required. Timecode/Footage Calculator (TCFEET) Most, Michael D. $0 is a handy utility to correlate film footage and video timecode. It can calculate properly using either drop frame or non-drop frame code. Requires VBRUN. Tynee-Calc (TYNCALC) Wilson, Michael $0 is a very small (about 1"x1") 4-function calculator that is operated with a mouse. Keyboard entry is also supported. You can copy/paste to and from the clipboard. C source code is included. 3350 DOS Access and Quick Exit/Shutdown --------------------------------------- DOS Button (DOSBUTN) $0 puts a little button on the desktop with which you can quickly open a DOS window. Requires VBRUN. DOS Doorway 1.0 (DOORWAY) Wall & Associates $0 lets you open a DOS window by clicking an icon on the desktop. Quick Restart for Windows 1.0 (QRFW) Mare, Jorge G. $0 quickly restarts Windows for when Windows has become corrupted or you want to change configurations. VBRUN is required. Restart SP Services $0 shuts down, then restarts Windows - just like Setup does, which is sometimes necessary for making changes in Windows take effect. TPW source code is included. Roger's Rapid Restart 2.0 (RRR) Planet Crafters Inc. ASP $10 provides extensive control over exiting and restarting Windows 3.1. Options include: Exit Windows; Restart Windows without having to go to the DOS prompt; Exit Windows, run a DOS app, and restart Windows; and Exit Windows and reboot. Terminator 1.0 (TRMNAT) Micro-Bytes\Wordware $0 is a quick exit utility for Windows. It positions a "hot spot" in the lower right hand corner of your desktop. Clicking on this spot produces four buttons that allow you to exit Windows, restart Windows, cancel, or exit Terminator. VBRUN200 is required. WinExit 1.1 Silver, Howard $0 lets you quit Windows quickly by double-clicking on an icon, it can also be run from the Program Manager. WinStop $0 is a quick exit for Windows. It appears as a stop sign icon. HexEdit 1.51 (HX-EDIT) Funk, Al $10 is a hexadecimal viewer and editor. Editing can be done in hex or text. Features include character counting, searching, and insertion/deletion functions. Russian Notepad (RUSSPAD) 09-93 CD Tavolga, Bill $0 is a simple English/Russian editor. A special TrueType font is included that allows you to toggle between fonts. A Russian keyboard layout display is also provided. VBRUN200 is required. SCFile 1.3 08-93 CD Software Assist Corp. $23 allows you to view very large multi-megabyte text files in Windows 3.1. It also provides high-speed text searching, and can extract portions of files to the clipboard or to another file. Support is provided for Windows for Workgroups. Requires VBRUN300. Text Manager 1.0 (TXTMGR) 08-93 CD Digital Software $10 is a nice replacement for NotePad. Desktop Utilities Small Programs Disk ----------------------------- Clipbox 2.0 Smith, Gordon L. ASP $10 allows you to capture text and graphics from the Clipboard to a retrievable stack file or save the text in a log file. Up to eight text items can be held in a single session. You can also print what is currently on the Clipboard and easily edit the Clipboard contents. VBRUN is required. Hider 1.0 SAYWare Development $0 is a handy little utility that allows you to hide any window or icon on your desktop. This is an excellent way to clean up a crowded desktop. QuickDex 1.07 (QDEX) 09-93 CD Suche, Steve $5 is quick and easy-to-use replacement for Windows CardFile. It allows you to enter several lines of free-form text, with full cut-and-paste functions. Other features include multiple data file support, fast forward/backward string searches, block edit commands, sound support, and more. Right Click 1.0 (RCLICK) Fitzpatrick, Joe $0 lets you call up the Task Manager by clicking the right mouse button while in any Windows application. Requires WIN31. TimeFrame (TIMEFRAM) Braeuchi, J. $0 displays the time on the caption bar of the current application. WinDex 1.1 (WIN-DX) EastWin Software $25 is a combination address book and phone dialer. It can store names, addresses, several phone numbers, and free form notes. Searches can be performed on name, company, state, and keyword. Addresses can be copied to the clipboard for easy importation into any word processor. Other features include an always on top option, autosave, display order options, and more. WINhide 1.0 Skamser, Erik $2 allows you to run many Windows programs invisibly, without even a desktop icon. This will also work with all DOS programs run from a PIF file with the "windowed" option selected. Window Control (WCONTRL) Desktop Utilities $10 allows you to control the start-up position and size of programs that cannot remember them on their own. After you start up an application and adjust its size and location to your satisfaction, you tell Window Control to add it to its list, then the next time you start the app, WC works in the background to return it to the same place. (We were expecting to have to start up the app through a menu in WC, but that is not necessary, which is nice.) WC also will optionally display date, time and system resources. Requires Windows 3.1. Workspaces 1.9 (WSPACE) Lekha $15 allows you to have up to six virtual desktops on your screen. Each workspace can have applications automatically opened when it is selected, have shared apps (File Manager, Program Manager, etc.), and its own specific wallpaper. This is an excellent way to unclutter your desktop while running multiple applications. Requires WIN31. 12094 Name/Address Management ----------------------------- Delevon 1.4 Wagner, Peter $0 is a simple, yet elegant program for maintaining a list of names and phone numbers. It can also dial numbers over a modem from the phone list or from manual entry. Phonebook Manager 0.5 (PHONMAN) Shojaee, Hamid $0 is a simple address/phonebook manager for Windows 3.1. The initial screen displays the name and primary phone number. A second screen can be brought up with the address, a second phone number, birthday information, and a scrolling free-form note field. Search facilities start looking for matches as you type. This is a well-done little utility with many nice features. Practical PhoneBook 1.1 (PFB-WIN) Chizhevsky, Gary $10 helps you organize and keep track of a personal phone directory. It allows you to store up to 1000 25-character names, and notes with any type of free-form information may be attached to each entry. Other features include dialing over a Hayes compatible modem, a search box that automatically pops up when you start typing, drag and drop file deletion, keyboard/mouse operation, and more. --------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #12094 --------------------------------- -------------- 3712 Reference Small Programs Disk -------------- 3712 Desktop Notes ------------------ Deskpad 1.0 Smith, Gordon L. ASP $10 is a desktop scratch pad for creating free-form notes. Up to eight 8K notes with descriptions can be accessed with a single mouse click. VBRUN is required. NoteIt 1.0 (NOTEIT) 09-93 CD Tardis DP Consultants $3 allows you to quickly jot down any type of free-form information. Saved notes are automatically date and time stamped, and are saved in an ASCII log for later viewing or printing. This is a very handy little electronic scratch pad. Requires VBRUN300. Phone Messages 1.04 (PH-MESS) Eisenbud, Todd $40 is a system for keeping track of phone messages for one or more people. You type in a person's name or choose it from a scrollable list, and type in the message. You can browse through all messages in the order they were taken or bring up all messages for a specific person. Messages can be printed. VBRUN reqd. PinUp Notes 1.2 (PINUP) Reed, Jonathan $6 lets you create post-it notes on your Windows desktop. It supports both text and bitmap notes. Double-clicking with the left mouse button brings up a text note, and the right mouse button brings up a bitmap note. Both types of notes can have their captions changed to reflect their contents. Other features include full clipboard support, built-in screen capture, printing options, and archived note support. This is a very well designed utility. Windows Messages 1.0 (WIN-MSG) Hatton, Tim $8 is a simple "while you were out" message system for Windows. It automatically stamps the date and time of the message when you start entering information, and the caption of the icon reflects the name of the person who left the message. Messages can be printed. VBRUN is required. 3712 Conversion Programs ------------------------ Convert (CNVTWIN) Jerry $0 is a English/Metric converter. This is fast and simple with informative on line help, and includes several less common conversions (like tons per square mile to Metric tons per hectare). VBRUN is required. Converter 1.0 (CONVRTR) Smith, Michael $5 is a comprehensive measure converter. It allows you to convert all the way from angstroms (one hundred millionth of a centimeter) to parsecs (3.26 light years) and almost everything in between, including U.S., metric units and surveyor's units. The weight modules include standard and metric units as well as Troy and Apothecary weights. The time module converts from nanoseconds to millennia. There are also modules for household conversions, tire pressure, desktop publishing and more. F-C-K Conversions 1.0 (FCKCONV) Orion Software Company $5 performs conversions between Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin units of measure. VBRUN is required. Large Area Conversions 1.0 (LA-CONV) Orion Software Company $5-$10 converts between Square Feet, Square Yards, and Square Miles to Square Kilometers, and Square Meters. VBRUN is required. Metric Converter 1.0 (METCON) Heath, Robert A. $7 converts between "customary" and metric units of measures. Categories include area, degrees/grads, degrees/radians, density, energy, length, mass/weight, nautical distance, power, pressure, temperature, units of time, velocity and volume. Small Area Conversions 1.0 (SA-CONV) Orion Software Company $5-$10 converts between Square Millimeters, Square Centimeters, and Square Inches, up to Square Meters. VBRUN is required. S-N-K Conversions 1.0 (SNKCONV) Orion Software Company $5 performs conversions between Kilometers, Statute Miles, and Nautical Miles. Ultimate Conversions 1.0 (ULTCONV) Renfro, Roger N. $15 performs conversions for 200 different units of measure. VBRUN is required. 3712 Miscellaneous ------------------ Area Code 1.1 (A-CODE) Vergos, Yorgo $0 returns the state and a sample city for a given long distance area code. ASCII Table (ASCII-W) Wilder, Greg $5 is a scrollable ASCII table for Windows 3.1. Executive Decision Maker 1.0 (EXECDEC) Mezaros, Mike $0 is an electronic version of one of those silly gadgets that answers "definitely", "maybe", etc, when you ask a question and shake the gadget - only you don't have to shake your computer, just click a button. VBRUN200 is required. Archon Ergosoft $77 #4357 is a powerful desktop information storage/retrieval system for Windows. It features full text retrieval not only for text documents but also for spreadsheets and archive files. Support is provided for numerous file formats including PKZIP, ARJ, LHARC, ARC, WinWord, MS-Word, WordPerfect, Excel, Lotus, Symphony, CorelDraw, Designer, Pagemaker, Paintbrush, TIFF, and more. Custom file formats may also be used. It lets you delete files by dragging them to the trashcan and start queries with a double-click on the file cabinet. Other features include virtually unlimited storage capacity with floppy disks and optical drives, file descriptions, long filenames, function key support, and more. Requires a 286 with at least 2 meg of RAM. Barry Press Utilities [BARRYUTL] 08-93 CD Press, Barry $20 #7884/3767 is a set of utilities for Windows: CALPOP: a simple calendar showing any month from 1980 through 2037. RUNNER: a Windows/DOS command line accessible from an icon. MATCH: a text file comparison program for Windows and DOS. FLIPPER: lets you change the default printer's orientation from an icon. PORTRAIT: forces the current default printer's orientation to portrait. LANDSCAP: forces the current default printer's orientation to landscape. TIME: a digital clock that also displays the date. MELTDOWN and VHOLD: two add-on modules for AfterDark. WAVER: randomly plays sound files. Six-Pack for Windows Lucas Systems $10/each #7884/3475 contains the following six useful utilities for Windows: SNAPSHOT - an easy to use screen capture program; LAUNCHER - a file launch program that allows you to search for files; RUNNER - a launch program that looks like Program Manager's Run Dialog but runs as a window and is always available; WALKER - a minimalistic version of Runner with just the command line; PAYOFF - calculates the payoff amount of a loan; and RED BUTTON - a "get out of Windows quick" program. All of these programs are very well done, and the included installation program makes getting started easy. BizWiz CalcTech $40 #7881/3679 is a desktop financial calculator that is fully compatible with the HP-12C handheld calculator. It also includes leasing functions, actuarial functions, modified internal rate of return, markup functions, and much more. It allows the creation of programs which can be saved as disk files, and be up to 999 steps. PC Week called BizWiz "an outstanding value" with "gorgeous on-screen emulation of the HP-12C". Business Calculator for Windows 2.10 Etling Software $25 #7881/4119 is a powerful financial, accounting, and statistical tool for WIN31. Financial and accounting computations include net present value, internal rate of return, present value, future value, interest rate, payment, growing annuity, effective annual rate, annual percentage rate, amortization, selling price, margin, markup, and cost. Statistical functions include mean, standard deviation, sums, correlation coefficient, intercept, and slope. It also features the ability to predict x and y variables in two variable statistics. Feet Inch Dimensional Calculator CLAW Software $49 #7881/4506 performs arithmetic with fractions as well as decimal numbers. Both types of numbers are displayed simultaneously, with fractional numbers rounded to the nearest sixteenth of an inch. The program is designed for carpenters, engineers, etc. VBRUN is included on this disk. RCalc Pocket-Sized Software $5 #7881/4511 is a full-featured talking calculator for Windows. If you have a sound card that can play WAV files, it will speak each keystroke as it is entered, as well as the answer. Mouse or keyboard may be used for input. Rcalc for Windows NT [NT_RCA] 08-93 CD Pocket-Sized Software $5 #12411 (WI-02) is a Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) calculator. On systems with sound cards it will speak each keystroke as it is entered. Requires the March Beta or later version of Microsoft Windows NT. Classic Timepieces HiColor Brown, Richard $20 #7879/3547 displays the time on a grandfather clock, a "den" clock (next to a lamp that you can turn on and off), or a "clock under glass". Requires VBRUN (available on PsL's Reviews Disks) and over 800K of hard disk space. ClockMan Graphical Dynamics, Inc. $50 #7879/3680 is an easy to use, yet comprehensive alarm clock and event scheduler. Alarms can be set for specific days as well as recurring weekly, monthly, and yearly alarms. The alarms can play several different attention-getting tunes and can also display a text box with your message. ClockMan will also schedule unattended operation of any application, complete with automatic keystrokes. When iconized, it provides a digital display of the current time. Other features include a TimeBar which displays the current time on the active window's caption bar, LAN support, and much more. SuperClock 1.1 [SPRCLK] 09-93 CD SouthBay Software $25 #7879/4594 is an excellent desktop clock/alarm system. It allows you to create an unlimited number of alarms with optional attached notes. It can also play a user-defined sound file at the top of the hour or as alarm reminders. Other features include a snooze bar feature, stay-on-top option, recurring alarms, and more.
